From the Chairs

Welcome to the Quantitative & Systems Biology (QSB) graduate program website. We are delighted that you have chosen (or are considering) the University of California, Merced, as the next stop in your academic and professional journey. As the largest interdisciplinary graduate program on campus, QSB provides a unique opportunity for graduate students to pursue a master’s (MS) or doctorate (Ph.D.) degree at a top-notch Research 1 (R1) institution with a smaller university feel. At UC Merced, you are not just another graduate student but an integral part of our team and our university’s research enterprise. You will contribute to ground-breaking research under the guidance of one of our expert faculty-scientists with the access to state-of-the-art research instrumentation and facilities.

Indeed, at UC Merced, our graduate students have access to modern labs including core facilities such as the: Imaging and Microscopy Facility (IMF), Environmental Analytical Laboratory (EAL), Molecular Characterization Facility (MCF), Stable Isotope Ecosystem Laboratory (SIELO), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility (NMR), Stem Cell Instrumentation Foundry (SCIF), and more.  We also have a newly constructed Biosafety Level 3 Research Facility and vivarium for in vitro and in vivo research that requires BSL3 containment.

QSB is an interdisciplinary program in Molecular & Cell Biology serving faculty and students engaged in cutting-edge research across multiple departments and disciplinary programs, including: Applied Math, Life & Environmental Sciences, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Medical Education, Cognitive & Information Sciences, Environmental Systems, Materials & Biomaterials Science & Engineering, Molecular & Cell Biology and Physics.

If you are not here already, please consider UC Merced and QSB for the next step in your journey. In the Central Valley, Ph.D. students can live comfortably on a teaching or research assistantship.  We also have several master’s degree pathways through which you can obtain your M.S. degree, including a 4+1 “Plus One Path” option (QSB MS-POP). We serve students, faculty, and staff from across the nation and from around the world. So, no matter where you are from, if you have a fascination with interdisciplinary science and wish to conduct top-notch scientific research, then QSB is likely the right choice for you.

The Chair and Vice-Chair of QSB welcome you!
